Medical staff at the Ibn Al-Nafees Hospital have announced they are searching for a nose
to be used in a controversial transplant operation. The surgery would be only the
second of its kind following a successful partial face trasplant in France last year.
Surgeons have said that the operation will be performed on an anonymous patient upon
receipt of a suitable nasal specimen at the hospital.
"We can't disclose the identity of the recipient at this time, but we are conducting a
preliminary search for noses of suitable tissue type, skin colour and aesthetic
qualities," a hospital spokesman said.
One of the most difficult operations to perform, a nose transplant grafts the donor nose
onto the face of the recipient. Complications can include rejection, infection as well
as a lack of satisfaction with the appearance of the new nose.
"In this case we have to be careful especially with a quality we call 'cuteness',"
cautioned chief plastic surgeon Fayd al Touk yr Honkr, himself endowed amply enough with
nasal acreage to donate to a dozen patients and still shade a herd of weary camels. "We
are searching for a 'cute little button pixie nose, all tiny and innocent like a white
boy's'," he said, reading from notes. "And that's what Michael wants, so that's what
Michael gets."
